CURATOR + SCIENTIST: New techniques, new ethics

Our first exhibition (UN)REAL is almost coming to an end. But not before we have celebrated this with an online Closing Weekend! Follow the conversation between (UN)REAL curator William Myers and Erasmus MC scientist Bas van Rijn about new techniques and ethics.

How do art and science influence each other? William Myers, curator of (UN)REAL, and Erasmus MC scientist Bas van Rijn will discuss new techniques within science and the way in which art questions these ethical issues and their implications. Where does science draw a line with the endless possibilities of today’s science? How will we deal with these new techniques in the future? And how far does art go with that?

William Myers, curator (UN)REAL. William Myers is a curator, author, and teacher based in Amsterdam. His book Biodesign (2018) identifies the emerging practice of integrating biological processes into design and architecture. His book Bio Art: Altered Realities (2015) profiles art that uses biology in new ways or responds to advances in the life sciences which disrupt our concepts of identity, nature, or the definition of life.

Dr. Bas van Rijn, Associate Professor in Gynecology-Perinatology. Bas van Rijn and his group of scientists have started using ‘organoid’ technology to grow a mini human placenta in the lab, and test new ways to shape and improve early human life support. This opens up new possibilities, but also creates new challenges and ethical questions about the boundaries of science and the balance between the possible and permitted uses of biotechnology.
